40 Life Sciences Report – Medical Imaging BIOQIC - BIOphysical Quantitative Imaging Towards Clinical Diagnosis DFG - Research Training Group Program In current medical imaging clinical practice, most diagnostic decisions are made based on qualitative markers whose interpretation is highly subjective and requires thousands of hours of training. BIOQIC, a DFG Research Training Group Program, was launched in March 2017 to overcome this gap and promote multidisciplinary research and education in imaging sciences with collaborative arrangements between basic research institutions, clinical sites of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin - including Europe’s largest radiological department - and regional enterprises in medical imaging technology. The BIOQIC research program will advance medical imaging methods towards system-independent quantification of the constitution and structure of soft tissues including vascular components, multiscale fluid motility, and mechanical parameters. Scientific training will be offered in 15 projects in 3 project areas: ‘Fluid Transport’, ‘Tissue Mechanics’ and ‘Tissue Structures’. with scientists and clinicians from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, the Charité, the Physikalisch- Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP). It is equipped with a 3.0 Tesla and a 7.0 Tesla whole-body human MR scanner and a 9.4 Tesla animal MR system. Cooperation agreements have been signed with Siemens Medical Solutions and Bruker Biospin. The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Berlin is involved in medical imaging through researching and developing coils for magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, this facility has expertise in the fields of biomedical optical imaging as well as measurement and characterization methods of magnetic nanoparticles as a tissue-specific marker. At the industry level, more than 15 companies in Berlin and Brandenburg are specifically dedicated to developing and producing contrast agents, such as nanoPET company, and optical imaging methods, such as Scopis and Fiagon. Scopis is a leader in medical augmented reality (AR) and Hybrid Navigation ® creating innovative solutions for the healthcare market, including technology for surgical education, planning and navigation systems for otorhinolaryngology, craniomaxillofacial, spine and neurosurgery. Scopis’ next-generation surgical products, called Target-Guided Surgery Systems (TGS ® ), guide the surgeon directly to anatomical targets along mapped-out pathways using AR-generated images overlaid onto the surgeon’s endoscope. In 2017, Scopis announced its collaboration with the German Accelerator Life Sciences (GALS) program, an initiative supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) that supports German companies accessing the US market. Fiagon is active in navigation technology using an electromagnetic tracking system and highly advanced algorithms to locate instruments throughout a surgical procedure, specifically for brain and spinal applications.
