34 Life Sciences Report– Cardiovascular Medical Technology Cardiovascular Medical Technology The area of cardiovascular medical technology is heavily represented due to the concentration of leading companies and institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg. Along with clinical applications of cutting-edge technologies in the region, exciting scientific trends are established here and join internationally recognized clinics and their renowned specialists in this highly innovative field. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent the most frequent cause of death in developed industrial countries, outpacing even cancers. In Germany, 40 percent of all causes of death are currently attributed to CVD. The ongoing industrialization in emerging and developing countries is accompanied by an increase in risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia. Together with demographic change, this will lead to a dramatic increase in the number of CVD cases, as well as exploding costs, in the coming years. The area of cardiovascular medical technology is heavily represented due to the concentration of leading institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg. Internationally recognized clinics create an excellent clinical environment. These include the German Heart Center in Berlin, renowned specialist clinic for heart, lung and vascular diseases, the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Vivantes clinics, the Heart Center Brandenburg in Bernau, one of the leading facilities in Germany, and the Carl-Thiem Hospital in Cottbus, with the Sana Heart Center. One of the most common cardiovascular diseases is cardiac insufficiency. More than 23.0 million people are affected by chronic or acute cardiac insufficiency worldwide today, with approx. 1.0 million new cases registered each year. Medical technology from Berlin-Brandenburg is a central component of the regional health industry, and is part of the technology of the future. Moreover, the region boasts a growing network of companies, medical facilities and institutes where patient-oriented research and development, as well as clinical application, are closely related. This innovative environment, and good networking between these companies and institutions, offer outstanding conditions. Supported by a focused innovation policy, a high performing cluster of ultra-modern workplaces has developed which stands out internationally, and which is already taking a leading position across Europe. Along with clinical applications of cutting-edge technologies in the region, exciting scientific trends are established here for new and further development in cardiovascular therapy. There are also other well-known medical institutions such as the Max-Delbrück-Center, where scientists pursue basic biomedical research in the field of cardiac insufficiency using cardio MRI in cooperation with Charité and Helios Hospital. Industrial solutions from Berlin-Brandenburg Many developments come either partially or entirely from Berlin and Brandenburg. Examples include pacemakers and implantable defibrillators from the Biotronik company, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cardio- and endovascular medical technology, which is headquartered “The German Heart Center Berlin is a leading cardiovascular center in Europe that offers high quality care for all adult and congenital heart diseases. The center is closely linked to major research institutions in the Berlin area and regional health care providers such as the Charité and Vivantes Group. Intensive R&D collaborations with MedTech companies in the Berlin region exist, for example with the Berlin Heart company, a manufacturer of mechanical circulatory assist devices.” © DHZB Prof. Dr. med. Another innovative product, the first drug eluting balloon from the B. Braun Melsungen company – which has a cardiovascular department in Berlin – and InnoRa company was developed in Berlin-Brandenburg. Telemedicine and heart insufficiency are strongly connected. Getemed in Teltow has expertise in developing diagnostic devices for home care monitoring of patients with heart failure using this approach. Around 1.0 million patients worldwide are in the terminal stage of cardiac insufficiency. For these patients, a heart transplantation represents the last possible available treatment. Accordingly, mechanical heart and circulatory support systems, so-called VADs (Ventricular Assist Devices) or artificial hearts, bridge the waiting period for a transplantation, and are increasingly used for years as a long-term alternative to heart transplantations. When a VAD system © B. Braun Melsungen “For 25 years, B. Braun worldwide acting Center of Excellence Vascular Systems has been developing cardiovascular products in Berlin. Its portfolio of interventional diagnostic and therapy system solutions is primarily targeted towards cardiologists, radiologists, and vascular surgeons. Continuously sharing expertise with our customers helps us build the platform for our sustainable success. Many innovative new products we created in close contact with partners in Berlin. Example: Drug coated balloons were developed in close cooperation with scientists at Charité.” Gerd Wacker Senior Vice President for Vascular Systems, B. Braun Melsungen
