32 Life Sciences Report – Minimally Invasive Medicine XION has been developing and producing devices, optics and instruments for ear, nose and throat surgery (ENT), arthroscopy, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Fifteen years ago, the company added endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of voice systems. Video stroboscopy units, flexible video endoscopes, and special instruments created new diagnostic possibilities and greatly facilitated phonosurgery procedures. This sophisticated overall concept made XION the market leader in this particular area of application. The MATRIX Spectar adaptive camera platform allows physicians to use video endoscopes and camera heads up to a sensor resolution of 4K, and to operate either 2D or 3D endoscopes on a camera processor. XION specific image processing algorithms provide outstanding image quality and open up new diagnostic possibilities with PIET. XION was awarded the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award in 2016 for developing the new Spectar camera platform. The MATRIX POLAR XION navigation system supports surgeons in carrying out interventions by continuously comparing radiological imaging data with current endoscopic images. All XION products are manufactured at its headquarters in Berlin. Since 2013, endoscopy specialist and systems supplier KARL STORZ has strengthened its presence in Berlin substantially by opening a branch at the former Kaiserin- Augusta-Hospital in Berlin. The main advantages of this location for KARL STORZ are its central location in Europe and the proximity to customers. The visualization technology IMAGE1 SPIES, which significantly improves endoscopic camera images by increasing contrast, homogeneous illumination, and hue shift, is among the company’s latest innovations. KARL STORZ is also a leader in fullyintegrated operating rooms with more than 4,000 installations. Thus, further developing software-based medical technology systems for integrated operating rooms such as KARL STORZ OR1 is an important pillar of the Berlin branch. KARL STORZ’s proximity to the market is used not only for product development, but also for medical education. The Berlin KARL STORZ Visitor Center has more than 5,000 visitors annually and hosts over 250 medical events. Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe is the hightech specialist within the Olympus Group, making it the development and production center for endoscopy, bipolar high-frequency surgery, system integration and instrument reprocessing. The location in Teltow is the global development and production center for high-frequency surgery (HF surgery), and specifically for generators and ablation. Bipolar HF technology is one of the key competencies and business fields in Teltow. This innovative procedure involves high-frequency current cuts and seals tissue efficiently and safely. With the innovative THUNDERBEAT system, Olympus is setting a new standard in modern tissue management. Minimally invasive medicine is a global growth market. Open surgeries or large cut surgeries are performed less and less frequently and are replaced by MIM procedures. The less invasive access techniques translate into significantly less stress for patients. Today, minimally invasive techniques are widespread across all medical indications, and have even been used for cardiac surgery on beating hearts. Companies in Berlin-Brandenburg are very well positioned to handle such challenges. The region’s unique scientific and clinical landscape is the driving force for businesses in the region to continue developing innovative products today and in the future.
