28 | Cluster Report I Transport, Mobility and Logistics – Automotive Metal Improvement Company, LLC Shot peening, parylene coating, vibratory finishing, laser peening, peen forming, abrasive blasting Metal Improvement Company: Global Player for innovative shot peening technology Metal Improvement Company (MIC) is a full subsidiary of Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies. MIC has 65 plants worldwide and since 2002 has offered controlled shot peening services at its Brandenburg plant near Berlin. These boundary layer strengthening processes for metallic components are primarily used in the automotive, aviation, machinery, and plant engineering industries, as well as in energy production. Controlled shot peening using stationary facilities or mobile technology at the customer’s site increases fatigue resistance in components subject to dynamic stress, increasing the service life of critical parts. Cold-working and targeted introduction of internal compressive stress in the surface layers of components avoids the incidence of fatigue cracks, while preventing the occurrence of fatigue crack corrosion. This allows a significant extension in the service life of components or total systems, an increase in safety and a decrease in downtimes, thus leading to a reduction in operational costs. Components that are suitable for processing by shot peening include gears, drive shafts, steering and chassis parts, turbine blades, engine parts, implants, structural components, and welded joints. Controlled shot peening is a procedure that can be applied to components of any size or weight. Faced with spiraling performance demands and lightweight construction requirements, companies can acquire a significant competitive edge through the application of this innovative surface layer technology. The three-shift manufacturing system at MIC in Brandenburg enables short processing times, not just for prototypes and small to mid-sized batches, but for large batches. ISO 9001:2015 ensures a high standard of quality, and the shot peening process can be applied flexibly to meet specific customer requirements.
