44 Life Sciences Report – A Top Location for Digital Health Electronic health information exchange The electronic exchange, processing, and provision of patient data facilitates efficient work by medical specialists, accelerates processes, and increases patient security. A large number of providers of innovative information systems for hospitals (CERNER, ID Berlin, OPTIMAL SYS- TEMS, Marabu), and doctor’s practices (CompuGroup medical, medatixx, Doc Cirrus) are headquartered in or have established branch locations in the capital region. In addition, they develop not only software, but also intelligent, networked medical technology and launch it successfully on the market (getemed, Meytec, Emperra). Big data and telemedicine The development and application of telemedicine and big data technologies are key topics being actively addressed by stakeholders in the Berlin-Brandenburg cluster for healthcare industries and life sciences. A long list of research institutions is shaping the future at an international level. The digitization of healthcare can contribute to the researching new treatment options, cost reductions, and the active participation of civil society in personal health management. The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) is specialized in precision and system medicine and focused on translational research. The Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC), run under the auspices of TU Berlin, facilitates deep analysis of massive amounts of heterogeneous data sets to train the data scientists of tomorrow. The Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering (HPI) in Potsdam is developing a health cloud and plans to introduce a separate master’s program in digital health. Several high-profile international research projects and clinical trials on telemedicine (FONTANE, TIM-HF II, CardioBBEAT) in Berlin-Brandenburg provide new scientific data and foster the development of marketable medical technology products by industrial partners. Digital and analog, perfectly connected The German capital region is not only a scientifically and economically fruitful environment with reliable partners and a broad variety of healthcare institutions, it is also a place where international opinion leaders meet for events, conferences and expos. Annual highlights include conhIT, Europe’s most important industry event for healthcare IT. The cluster frequently uses its home advantage here, offering insight into the innovative power of the digital healthcare industry at the joint Berlin-Brandenburg booth and at business meetings, start-up showcases, and excursions to key local companies. One key factor offered by the location in developing digital health solutions is the diverse landscape of research institutions and universities in the German capital region, and interdisciplinary collaboration between science, clinics, the economy, and associations. MACSS - Medical Care Allround-Service Solutions The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is developing the prototype MACSS - Medical Care Allround-Service Solutions - platform with a consortium of research institutions and industrial partners, and in cooperation with health insurance companies, patient associations, and pharmaceutical companies. It is a new and comprehensive patient-centered smart electronic health care service platform to provide integrated care to chronically ill patients. Its goal is to achieve better patient safety by improving both physician-to-patient and the physicianto-physician communication through a single joint communication platform across existing software systems. All relevant patient data from the patient, physicians, and hospital systems will be integrated and combined. This single platform allows optimized drug dosing and close surveillance of chronically ill patients, and will lead to better drug safety and timely detection of complications, resulting in less hospitalizations and better outcomes. www.macss-projekt.de
