42 Life Sciences Report – A Top Location for Digital Health A Top Location for Digital Health The terms eHealth, Digital Health, or Health IT describe the process of digitization within the healthcare sector. The use of digital technologies and modern eHealth applications will not only lead to significant increases in the efficiency of the health system and in supply quality, but will also open up all-new prevention and treatment approaches. Key players in this development are based in the German capital region. The HealthCapital region brings together one of Europe’s most attractive life science and healthcare locations, with an important hub for the IT industry including a growing number of IT companies focused on the healthcare market. This environment provides ideal conditions for developing, evaluating, and marketing innovative digital health solutions. With their pioneering spirit and digital expertise, startups deliver fresh solutions for digital transformation in the healthcare industry. The German capital region is home to over one hundred digital health start-ups, and their numbers are growing each year. They develop mobile apps and wearables to empower patients suffering from chronic diseases and assist in their self-management. State-of-the-art technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence, and big data accelerate new applications. For instance, Ada and xbird offer AI-powered decision support technology for both doctors and consumers. Caterna offers an innovative visual therapy for kids with a lazy eye. Mimi hearing provides hearing assistance linked to internet applications and mobile devices to enhance sound for people with reduced hearing capacities. The team at Clue, the world’s fastest growing menstruation cycle tracking app, uses science and data to provide insights into female health. The regional start-up ecosystem is highly self-organized and offers young pioneers a broad range of events such as meetups, bar camps, seed camps and hackathons. Start-ups accelerated by grownups The German capital region has everything a digital health start-up could possibly want: VCs, incubators, and accelerators focused on the healthcare market, research institutions that welcome collaboration, and numerous networking events that bring together potential partners and stakeholders. Thus an increasing numbers of global players and companies based in Berlin are seeking to forge contacts with start-ups to invent new digital products and methods for the healthcare market. Berlin hosts over 60 accelerators and incubators, many of them with a strong focus on the healthcare sector. Bayer was one of the first movers in this area, with Grants4Apps. This program was successfully launched in Berlin in 2012, and has now been expanded to many other cities around the world. Pfizer also supports digital solutions for better patient care through the Healthcare Hub Berlin. Deutsche Telekom offers start-ups in the “Cerners Healthcare IT solutions connect people, data and systems in more than 25.000 institutions worldwide. Berlin is our German headquarter and a central development hub. We serve more than 500 hospitals using our SW solutions and attract highly qualified employees to create new compelling software towards the ‘digital hospital’ as well as innovative concepts for patient centered care and the future of our healthcare systems.” © Cerner Dr. Thomas Berger General Manager, Cerner Health Services Deutschland GmbH
